  10. 10FAQ: Halloween tattoos in Montreal

Skulls, pumpkins, bats, witches: October is the perfect month for a dark, symbolic tattoo. Here are 15 Halloween tattoo ideas, the styles that suit them best, and how to walk in at our Old Montreal studio and leave with your piece the same day.

Why get a Halloween tattoo?

In tattoo culture, Halloween is much more than a costume party: it’s the season of dark symbols, elegant macabre and the dark imagery that has always been part of tattooing’s DNA. Skulls, reapers, snakes and ravens have been classic designs for more than a century; October just gives them a great excuse to go under the needle.

A Halloween tattoo doesn’t have to be a grinning pumpkin (although that works too!). The best pieces play on timeless themes, death, night, mystery and transformation, that you’ll be proud to wear long after October 31.

In Montreal, the timing is even better because fall is one of the best times of year to get tattooed: less sun, no swimming, and easier healing under long sleeves.

“A good Halloween tattoo gives you chills in October, and still looks great all year.”

15 Halloween tattoo ideas

From discreet mini flash to large realistic pieces, here are the most requested designs of the season, and the style they look best in.

1. Skull

The ultimate classic. In black and grey realism for a striking result, or in traditional for a bold vintage look.

2. Jack-o’-lantern

The jack-o’-lantern is made for old school flash: thick outlines, bright orange and an unsettling grin.

3. Bat

Small and symmetrical, ideal in fine line or blackwork on the wrist, the ankle or behind the ear.

4. Spider and web

A web wraps naturally around the elbow or shoulder: an iconic placement in tattoo tradition.

5. Ghost

Cute or creepy, the little ghost is one of the most popular Halloween flash designs for a first tattoo.

6. Witch

A realistic portrait, a silhouette on a broom against the moon or a minimalist pointed hat: the witch comes in endless versions.

7. Black cat

A symbol of mystery and luck (good or bad). Striking in solid blackwork or as a simple fine line silhouette.

8. Grim reaper

A powerful piece for the forearm, calf or back, especially impressive in dark realism.

9. Skeleton hand

The “X-ray” tattoo on the back of the hand or fingers, very popular in fine line.

10. Moon and raven

A poetic, nocturnal composition, ideal on the shoulder blade or collarbone.

11. Vampire

Fangs, cape and a hypnotic stare: the perfect subject for a black and grey realistic portrait.

12. Calavera

The decorated sugar skull inspired by Día de los Muertos, full of floral and ornamental details: beautiful in colour.

13. Demon and mask

A hannya mask or a horned demon: an expressive design that shines in blackwork or realism.

14. Horror movie icons

A portrait of a cult horror character is one of the most requested realism projects in October.

15. Candle and spellbook

Occult, witchy vibes: a melting candle on an old book, beautiful in black and grey or neo-traditional.

Which style should you choose for your Halloween tattoo?

Black and grey realism: the king of dark tattoos. Deep shading, dramatic contrast, skin and bone textures: it’s the ideal style for skulls, vampires, horror portraits and reapers. See the realism work of Mathias and Darick, and the dark realism of Darren.

Traditional / old school: thick outlines, a limited palette and perfect readability from afar. The perfect style for pumpkins, black cats and spider webs in vintage flash style. See Karl’s portfolio.

Fine line: for a subtle, elegant touch of Halloween: a small bat, a moon, a minimalist skeleton hand. Read our complete fine line tattoo guide.

Anime and manga: Japanese horror and dark anime characters make unique, colourful pieces. See the work of Kouacou.

How long does a Halloween tattoo take?

Time depends mostly on size and detail. Here’s a rough guide to plan your visit:

Project Approximate time
Mini flash (bat, ghost) About 1 hour
Small design (pumpkin, black cat) 1 to 2 hours
Medium piece (skull, witch) 2 to 4 hours
Realistic horror portrait A full day
Themed sleeve or back piece Several sessions

These are estimates: your artist will confirm the exact time during the consultation.

Caring for a fresh tattoo over Halloween

Getting tattooed right before Halloween is a great idea, as long as you protect your new piece during the festivities. A fresh tattoo is an open wound for roughly the first two weeks:

  • No makeup or fake blood on the tattoo: body paint, latex, prosthetic glue and fake blood can irritate the skin and cause an infection. Keep the tattooed area completely clear.
  • Watch out for tight costumes: friction from synthetic fabrics, leather or latex slows healing. Choose a costume that’s loose over the tattoo.
  • Go easy on alcohol: alcohol dehydrates the skin and can slow healing. Stay hydrated and keep applying your aftercare cream, even during the party.
  • Book your session a few days ahead if you want to show off your tattoo on the 31st: it will be past the most sensitive stage.

For every step of healing, see our tattoo aftercare guide and our page on how to prepare.
